Juzwishin, Anne
Dec. 4, 1926 - Jan. 22, 2017

Anne passed away peacefully in Calgary on Sunday January 22, 2017. Anne had celebrated her 90th birthday with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the month before her passing.

Anne was born in Krasne, Ukraine on December 4, 1926. Her father, Artem Dombrowski, immigrated to Canada in 1928 in search of freedom and opportunity. Once he had established his homestead in Kisituan, he sent for Anne and her mother, Ewa (Horbach). They left Krasne in December 1936 and began their long journey, first to Dansing Poland, then on to Liverpool to board the Cunard Line and sail to Halifax, Canada. While most passengers suffered from the rough seas, Anne and another young girl became friends and were thrilled with the adventure. Anne attended Ksituan School, helped her parents on the farm, and at the age of 18 went off to Matsqui and Peachland BC to pick fruit for the summer where she developed a love for the Okanagan, returning home to help on the farm that fall.

Anne became reacquainted with her neighbour, Philip Juzwishin, when he returned from the war, and on January 7, 1951 they were married. Philip registered a homestead adjacent to that of his and Anne's parent’s quarter sections, where they built their first home. Donald William was born in 1953 and Elaine Carol in 1956. The farm meant hard work but it was an idyllic setting to raise their family, grain and gardens. Anne loved her gardens - vegetable, flower and berry.

In 1966 Philip and Anne built a home in Spirit River and moved into town but they continued farming until 1984 when they retired to Kelowna, BC. In retirement they enjoyed tending their large vegetable garden and fruit trees, generously sharing with family and friends. Anne loved to entertain and, as it was in Spirit River, their Kelowna home was always bustling with friends and relatives. Kelowna was a very popular destination where family regularly congregated to enjoy Philip’s and Anne’s hospitality and endless supply of Anne’s delicious Ukrainian meals. Anne was predeceased by her husband Philip in 2009 and in 2014 she moved to Calgary to be closer to family.

Anne is survived by her son Don (Pat Moore-Juzwishin) of Edmonton, daughter Elayne Juzwishin-Stewart (Alastair) of Calgary; 5 grandchildren, Kelsey Kozoriz (Michael), Petra Warnock (Randall), Avril Juzwishin, Torran Stewart, and Maren Stewart; and 4 great-grandchildren, William Kozoriz, Alice Kozoriz, Grayson Warnock and Aidan Warnock.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday February 4, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spirit River, AB, followed by interment at Ksituan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
