Eligio Rabis
June 18, 1930 - February 10, 2017
RABIS, Eligio (Eddie)
Eligio (Eddie) Rabis passed peacefully on February 10, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada at the age of 86. Eddie was predeceased by his daughter Linda in 2014 and is survived by Sidonia (Sida), his loving wife of 62 years, his eldest daughter Barbara, and Linda’s widower, Don.
Born and raised in Trieste Italy, Eddie met the love of his life, Sida, while on patrol as an officer in the local police force. He and his best friend happened upon Sida and her cousin picking flowers and were stricken. Always one to take charge when required, Eddie quickly paired up his best friend with Sida’s cousin and set about courting Sidonia. Eddie and Sida were married in March 1954.
At the close of World War II, due to his service in the police force as part of the British administration of the territory, Eddie and Sidonia were offered the chance to relocate within the Commonwealth. Eddie’s first choice was Canada however due to the winter conditions and resultant waiting period, they chose Australia. So, care of the British government, Eddie and Sida found themselves travelling by ship (first class!) from England to Australia in November 1955.
Moving to Australia was a fierce challenge for the young couple, but it was also prosperous and successful as Eddie built a new career in accounting. The eventual additions to their pride and joy, their daughters Barbara and Linda, made their family complete. Unsurprisingly, the family enjoyed travel and made regular trips to Europe, USA and Canada to explore and experience the world while making many joyous memories for each of them.
After Eddie’s youngest daughter, Linda, married a Canadian and moved to Calgary in 2004, ongoing visits to Calgary convinced adventuresome Barbara to move there too. With both daughters happily in Canada, Eddie and Sida immigrated for the second time in their lives and the entire family was reunited in Calgary in November 2012.
Although the last years of Eddie’s life included the heavy burden of the loss of Linda in June 2014 and his own battle with dementia, Eddie’s spirit and love for his wife Sida and daughter Barbara were always evident in the sparkle in his eyes. Eddie was greatly respected by friends and co-workers, greatly loved by his family and will be greatly missed by all.
May God Bless Eddie.
