Herbert Thompson
November 19, 1917 - February 26, 2016
THOMPSON, HERBERT CAMERON
1917 - 2016
Herb quietly sailed away on his next journey in the early hours of February 26th. He spent his last days surrounded by family and when he passed away, the love of his life, Greta, was by his side as she had been for the last 68 years.
During his life, Herb was embraced by a great circle of love that included his wife Greta and their 5 children, Louise, Valerie (Nick), Cam (Laurie), Trish (Jim) and Scott (Sandy), 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. Everyone that knew Herb could see that he was the quintessential family man. He enjoyed nothing more than a big family get together. Family was his first priority and he encouraged and supported the interests and educational endeavours of each generation.
Herb graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He had a long and successful career with the British American Oil Company and its successor Gulf Canada.
Herb was a lifelong learner, curious and knowledgeable about a variety of subjects. He was an avid gardener, a handyman, a cook, and an enthusiastic billiards player. He and Greta travelled to many destinations during their retirement years. Herb loved engaging friends, family and strangers in conversation and discussion. He was actively involved with Woodcliff United Church for many years and was a tireless community volunteer. In his quiet and humble way, Herb positively influenced the lives of countless people throughout his lifetime.
Herb’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Woodcliff United Church (5010 Spruce Drive SW) at 11:00 a.m., presided by the Reverend Linda Hunter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Woodcliff United Church or a charity of your choice.
