HAAS, James (Jim) John
November 29, 1929 - September 28, 2015

James Haas passed away peacefully at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary after a short illness.

James was predeceased by Beverly, his loving wife of over 60 years, whom he met at the University of Michigan; his beloved granddaughter, Alicia Bateman; his parents John and Katherine Haas and his sister Phyllis Shamrock. James is survived by his daughters Lynne Haas (Ernest Shanahan), Cathy Sharpe (Howard) and his son James Haas (Debra).

James was born in McKague, Saskatchewan and spent his early life there. He attended high school at St. Peter’s College in Muenster, Saskatchewan. James played Major Junior hockey in Prince Albert and Moose Jaw and attended several NHL tryout camps. Ultimately he accepted a hockey scholarship from the University of Michigan where he was on teams that won two NCAA championships. He was captain of the Michigan team one year, was named an All American and inducted into the University of Michigan Hockey Hall of Fame. He also was accepted into the highest non-academic society at the University.

James obtained his Masters degree in Geology and worked in the oil industry for several different companies and on his own for a short period. Except for a four-year period in Regina, his career was spent in Calgary. He was a member of APEGGA, the Canadian Society of Professional Geologists and a member of the Petroleum Club.

While in Calgary James played hockey in the men’s leagues and coached Bantam hockey for seven years. He was an avid golfer and active member of the Willow Park Golf Club for over 40 years. James and his loving wife Beverly travelled extensively. They travelled the Americas from the Arctic to the Amazon and to every continent except Antarctica. James played golf in China, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. One of the highlights of their travels was a balloon ride over the Serengeti in Tanzania. Since retirement James and Beverly spent many winters in warm spots but settled on Green Valley in southern Arizona. While there it frequently fell upon him to honour the requests of his visitors to take them to Tombstone for the reenactment of the Gunfight at the OK Corral. As James observed, the outcome was always the same.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Rockyview General Hospital Units 94, 71 and GARP for the wonderful care James received during his hospital stay. At James’ request no funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, a donation may be made to an animal charity of the donor’s choice.
