William MacDonald
November 13, 1914 - February 27, 2016
MacDonald, William Delbert (Bill)
November 13, 1914 - Consort, Alberta
February 27, 2016 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill MacDonald. He died peacefully at the age of 101. Bill is survived by his daughters, Nancy (Roy) and Kathy (Des); five grandchildren, Susan, Clifford, Alan, Lana and Valerie and five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Sydney, Kale, Rachel and Sarah. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret.
Bill was born and raised with his younger brother Tom on a farm near Consort, Alberta. He lived and worked there until he went to Normal School to become a teacher in rural Alberta. He joined the Navy in WWII and upon his return, went to the University of Alberta where he got his undergraduate and masters degrees in science. He lived at St Stephen’s College in Edmonton while completing his degrees and it was during this time that he met Margaret (the secretary at St Stephen’s College - which probably meant she practically ran the place). They were married for 57 years until Margaret passed away in 2004.
Bill worked as a geologist in Calgary for over 63 years and retired at age 95. He loved his family and nothing pleased him more than family gatherings from picnics to holiday celebrations to weddings. He especially loved spending time with the youngest members of the family; his face would light up. He also had a strong social conscience and was deeply involved in politics where he spent many hours working in the background for various provincial political campaigns.
Dad’s honesty, integrity, strong morals and principals will guide us throughout our lives. He was one of the good guys and the world will be a sadder place without him.
The family wishes to thank all the staff at Eau Claire Retirement Centre for their compassion and the quality of their care during the last years of Dad’s life.
