Mrs. Mary Perks of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully on Monday, April 01, 2013 after a brief illness. She was the loving mother of Jeffrey Perks and wife Tobie and a devoted grandmother to Brittany and Justine. She is also survived by numerous relatives in Slovakia, Pennsylvania and Ontario. Mary was predeceased by her father John in 1976 and her mother Anna in 1993.
Born in Fulianka, Czechoslovakia on October 23, 1927, Mary immigrated to Canada with her mother, to join her father, in Carstairs, AB. The family moved to Calgary in 1936 where she has since resided. She attended Riverside and Langevin schools, graduating from Western Canada High School with a Secretarial Arts Certificate. Mary was in the workforce for forty-five years, employed with Loram Group of Companies for twenty-three years until her retirement in 1992 and was instrumental in the formation of the Loram Groups History Centre. Mary had also been with Foothills Pipelines for a number of years. A long-standing member of the Senior Citizens Club (AUUC), she was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Activetts. Mary loved to travel and cruise, and often reminisced about a recent family cruise to Mexico. Mary will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, organization and the assistance she provided to many Slovak immigrants by handling their personal family matters regarding their legal matters and communicating with their families in Slovakia.
