SCOTLAND, WILLIAM ALEXANDER
May 5, 1928 - May 27, 2016

It is with great sadness the family of William (Bill) Alexander Scotland, beloved husband of Alma Josephine, announce that he passed away on May 27, 2016 at the Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 88. Bill and Alma would have been married 65 years this September.

Bill was the son of Alexander and Anne Scotland, the oldest of three brothers but predeceased by Jack (Eloise) and David (Joyce); father of four children: Francis, Christine, Philip (Jeanne) and Cathie (Philip); and seven grandchildren: Andrew, Mark, Ian, Neil (engaged to Rachel), Kate, Erin and Cecilia. He was loved by his children and adored by his grandchildren, the family patriarch in every sense.

Bill was a scholar who received the Governor General’s Award for top high school student in Alberta and went on to graduate from the University of Alberta in engineering with distinction. His career was spent in the oil and gas industry where he was involved early on as an engineer with the Athabasca Oil Sands Project and Texaco before being seconded to the newly formed National Energy Board in Ottawa. He ultimately became a member of the board and eventually was appointed by the Prime Minister’s Office as Designated Officer for the Northern Pipeline Agency. He later returned to the private sector back in Alberta working with Western Gas Marketing and TransCanada Pipelines as a senior executive.

Poised much of the time, polished most of the time, Bill was a brilliant and eloquent raconteur whether it was delivering a professional speech or telling stories to his grandchildren. Famed for his wit, he was a master at delivering the one liner that sold the speech or had his family rolling with laughter. Despite the purpose his career brought him, the foundation of Bill’s life was his faith, his marriage to Alma and his devotion to family.

He believed that faith came first, and it gave him a life grounded in calmness, confidence and purpose. His love for Alma was endless, they were inseparable, lifelong best friends and partners. Together they were involved in many church related activities including the Catholic Family Movement, where they made lifelong friends, and Marriage Encounter.

A man of few words, Bill was a tireless source of help in all forms to his children and grandchildren. Known to them as “Poppie” his greatest delights were his grandchildren, their stories and successes. Their memories of him are only of complete acceptance, encouragement and unconditional love.

A Prayer Vigil will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass on Wednesday June 1, 2016 at noon, both at St. Michael’s Catholic Community, 800-85 St. SW Calgary, AB with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to World Vision www.worldvision.ca.
