ROWNEY, Dr. Julianne Irene Anne

December 11, 1937 - October 20, 2014

With great sadness we mourn the passing of Julie Rowney, suddenly, after a brief illness, on Monday, October 20, 2014 in Calgary.

Julie was a native Calgarian, graduating from Western Canada High School. She excelled in academics, beginning with a Bachelor of Science at the Nursing School at the Calgary General Hospital. She then attended the University of British Columbia where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in 1960, followed by the University of Calgary where she obtained her Master of Science (Psychology) in 1972 and her Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology) in 1975. Her devotion to academics resulted in many awards such as Killam Scholarships (1972-1974), a Killam Research Fellowship (1999), President’s Faculty International Achievement Award (2004), and the Alberta Centennial Medal (2005).

Her journey may have begun in Calgary, but her passion for inspiring others to learn, took her to China, Australia, Hungary, Iran and finally Latin America. Julie served many roles in her career such as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies (U of C), Dean and Chief Executive of the International Management Centre, Budapest Hungary and Director Organizacion Latino Americana De Energia (OLADE), and Fellow of the Latin America Research Centre. She enjoyed her role as Professor, Haskayne School of Business, U of C: where she collaborated with many beloved colleagues and accomplished Phd. Students.

Julie was extremely close with her family whether it be golfing out at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club, taking trips, sharing a passion for art with her daughter Carolyn, or baking million-dollar cookies with her grandchildren. Her smile, laugh and friendliness will be truly missed. Above all, she cherished her family and friends and gave them the best of herself. We bid her loving farewell, comfort and peace. She is survived by her loving family: daughters, Carolyn of Toronto, Susan and her husband Stephen Farner of Calgary: her beloved and adoring grandchildren, Erin and Jonathan.

A Celebration of Julie’s Life will be held at the Glencoe Club, 636 29 Ave SW, Calgary on Monday, October 27, 2014 from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M, with Words of Comfort commencing 5:00 P.M. sharp. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting leydens.com .
